Positive Self-Talk For Medical Practice Leaders

Dearest Medical Practice Leader,

Do you ever feel as though criticism is all you hear— from your patients, colleagues or fellow providers? Maybe you read a misleading, negative review that inaccurately portrays a patient interaction. Or, perhaps you overheard some negativity as you walked past your clinic or lobby. Having people in your professional and personal lives who criticize you is completely normal— after all, it is much easier to be a critic than a problem solver. However, it does not take much for you to begin criticizing yourself. It is then that your confidence in yourself as a strong and compassionate leader can waver.

Breaking the Negative Self-Talk Cycle

When this negative cycle of self-talk starts, it’s hard to stop— much like it’s hard to go to the gym once you are comfortable on the couch. Don’t allow yourself to sink into this cycle! Stop negativity in its tracks with three simple steps. Shut your office door, take a walk or put on some headphones and read the following prompts:

  1. “I forgive myself for allowing negativity to change my thoughts.” Being kind to yourself is the first step to controlling the voices in your head. If we cannot forgive ourselves for our criticism, then we cannot forgive others.
  2. “I am doing a great job.” Tip: if you want extra positivity, remind yourself of something specific that you do well. For example, say, “I am doing great at running this practice, and it shows in the hundreds of glowing reviews we have on Google.” Or, “I am great at communicating with my team.”
  3. “I am grateful for…” Expressing gratitude for both your professional and personal successes can instantly boost your mood and rid your mind of negative self-talk. Try thinking of something that you are particularly grateful for that day, or simply say, “I am grateful for the opportunity to lead my practice and care for patients.”

Criticism is a normal part of practice life, especially in a leader’s life. Reminding yourself of your strengths, successes and why you do what you do can help you to take charge of your self-talk and be the best leader you can be!
